Sweatshirt zipped England 1966

Success at the World Cup on home soil was the greatest footballing moment for the nation that invented football. Manager Alf Ramsey's "wingless wonders" were hated by some for a pragmatic approach that focused on substance rather than style, but Ramsey was simply aligning himself with the increasingly cautious nature of the world game at the time. The World Cup winners had an extremely strong central backbone with Banks, Moore, Stiles and Charlton and a particularly good midfielder: Ball's energy and Peters' vision complemented Nobby Stiles' talent and Bobby Charlton's attack. Jimmy Greaves was England's most talented striker, but when he injured himself in the group stages Geoff Hurst was a more than acceptable substitute. The West Ham striker scored the winner in the quarter-final against Argentina and a hat-trick in the final.
