Goalkeeper Protection

1 product
1 of 1 products

The Protection page of the goalkeeper brings together elbow pads, knee pads, shin guards, finger and hip protection, so you can dive without getting hurt.

Dive, come out with your feet and box the ball safely, both in training and in matches.

Elbows, Hips and Knees

The goalkeeper falls on the same points with every dive: the elbow, which cushions the fall when the arms reach for the ball, the hip, which touches the ground first in a sideways dive, and the knee, which is used when kneeling to block a ball near the ground. Padded elbow and knee guards, underwear with integrated protection, and padded shorts prevent bruises and burns on synthetic or dry pitches.

Fingers and Shins

The goalkeeper's fingers take powerful shots: gloves with spines limit twisting, and the strapping of the fingers, applied with adhesive tape, supports a fragile or previously injured joint. Like all players, the goalkeeper wears shin guards, which are mandatory according to Law 4 of the Laws of the game: challenges at the feet of an attacker particularly expose them to kicks.

The Helmet and Advanced Protection

After a skull fracture in 2006, Czech goalkeeper Petr Čech played the rest of his career with a padded soft helmet, which popularised this protection among goalkeepers. It is allowed by the Laws of the game, provided it poses no danger. Protection should be chosen in the right size: too big, and it slips during dives and leaves areas exposed; too small, and it restricts movement.

The Goalkeeper's Equipment

The goalkeeper completes their kit with gloves, shirts, shorts, trousers, baselayers, full kits, all gathered on the goalkeepers page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does a goalkeeper wear padded shorts?

In a sideways dive, the hip touches the ground first. The padded short or undershorts cushions these repeated impacts, especially on dry or synthetic surfaces, where burns and bruises are common.

Do goalkeepers need finger protection?

Finger protections, in the form of gloves with spines or splints, reduce the risk of sprains when a shot puts pressure on outstretched fingers. They provide reassurance to young goalkeepers and those returning from an injury.

Why do some goalkeepers wear helmets?

A soft helmet protects the head during challenges at the feet and impacts against a post or an opponent. It is recommended after a concussion, and some goalkeepers wear it as a precaution, especially among youngsters.

What shin guards are suitable for a goalkeeper?

The goalkeeper needs lightweight shin guards that do not hinder dives or jumps. They are mandatory in matches just like for field players, and they should be worn under well-pulled-up socks.

How do you choose the right size for goalkeeper knee pads?

A knee pad must stay in place during a dive without compressing the joint: measure the leg circumference just above the knee. If too loose, it will slip at the first contact; if too tight, it will restrict bending.
