With Tchécoslovaquie failing to qualify for the major summer tournaments in 1972 and 1974, the determination to make it to the finals of the European Championships in 1976 Yugoslavia was high. Václav Ježek's team qualified from a tough group that included England and Portugal, and went on to win a 4-2 play-off against the Soviet Union. With star players like Viktor, Ondrus, Nehoda and Panenka playing their best football, Tchécoslovaquie surprised the continent by beating first the Netherlands in the semifinals and then West Germany in the final on penalties, the winning goal scored in extravagant style by Antonin Panenka.
