The end of Yugoslavia as we knew it in 1992, which meant its participation in the World Cup two years earlier, was the tournament that brought down the curtain on a proud historical record of eight World Cups and four European Championships.Yugoslavia qualified undefeated for the 1990 tournament after dominating a tough group ahead of Scotland and France. The creative midfielder Dragan Stojkovic was the undisputed star of the team and his talents were complemented by players such as the talented attacking midfielder Safet Susic, with Srecko Katanec, the deep-lying anchor, and Davor Jozic, the free-scorer. As if established talent was not good enough in itself, the team also boasted a new generation of promising players who would prove even better than their predecessors - footballers of the calibre of Prosinecki, Pancev, Jarni and Savicevic. Yugoslavia qualified for the Round of 16 of the tournament as runners-up to West Germany. Stojkovic scored both goals in a 2-1 extra-time win over Spain in the Round of 16 to take Yugoslavia into the quarter-finals, but progress was halted by an unfortunate penalty shoot-out defeat to Argentina.
