Home jersey Australia World Cup 1974
For so long, the modern history of the Australian World Cup has been one of near-failure in qualifying. Australians usually reached the final play-off stage and then failed to make the final hurdle - as they did six times between 1966 and 2002. So 1974 brought great relief to the team when another barrage was reached, but this time won at the expense of South Korea. Led by captain Peter Wilson, the mainly amateur team ended up going no further than the group stage. Australia failed to score in any of their three games, but had the minor consolation of a point in a 0-0 draw with Chile.
