Croatia became an independent country in 1990 and created a national football team almost simultaneously. This team celebrated its new status by playing its first match against the United States in October of the same year. 1992 was an important year in the development of football in the new republic with the formalisation of Stanko Poklepovic's team's admission to FIFA. It was in Australia that Croatia played its first matches as an official football nation in the red and white checked shirts. The Croatians had a huge impact on Euro 96, which is not surprising considering the amount of talent available in the early days of the competition. Players of the calibre of Robert Jarni, Robert Prosinecki, Davor Suker and Zvonimir Boban were seasoned international stars for Yugoslavia, who have now returned to their native Croatia, and the established players have been complemented by an exceptional new generation of emerging talents, including Slaven Bilic, Alen Boksic and Dario Simic.
