The brilliant Dutch midfielder Johan Neeskens arrived at the Camp Nou in the summer of 1974, and Barcelona looked set to build on the momentum of the previous season and compete in the European Cup for the first time in 14 years, but Real Madrid never managed to match a team that finished 13 points ahead of them in the final table. Barcelona were even pushed into third place by Real Zaragoza. Barca played three rounds and six European Cup matches without conceding a goal, but found the proposal of English champions Leeds United too difficult in the semi-finals.
