Description
The Tunisie appeared on the international scene for the first time in the second half of the 1970s.
The nation qualified for the 1978 African Cup of Nations
, but more importantly, this group also doubled as a qualifier for the 1978 World Cup, meaning that the national team
would represent their continent at Argentine.
At the tournament itself, the Carthage Eagles beat Mexique 3-1, making history as the first African nation to win a match in a World Cup final
. A courageous goalless draw against WestAllemagne was another highlight of their tournament but, unfortunately, Abdelmajid Chetali's impressive
players narrowly missed out on progressing to the Round of 16.
Key members of this 1978 team included goalkeeper Sadok Sassi, attacking midfielder Tarak Dhiab and main striker Mohieddine Habita.
