The second half of the 1980s was a difficult and turbulent period for Fulham, which sank to the depths of the English third division. With young manager Ray Lewington at the helm, a good 1988-89 campaign saw the Cottagers reach the play-offs, but the 1989-90 season showed a marked decline. For much of the season, the Fulham team found itself caught up in a relegation battle, sitting 20th at point and one place ahead of Cardiff City in the relegation zone. Clive Walker and Gordon Davies battled to score the goals that kept Fulham up and Walker finished the campaign as the club's top scorer.
