The three giants of Portuguese football.
Portuguese football is dominated by three clubs, the três grandes, who share almost all of the championship titles. Benfica and Sporting, based in Lisbon, face off in a passionate derby, while FC Porto represents the power of the north of the country. The Portuguese league is also a great breeding ground for talent, having produced Eusébio, Luís Figo, Cristiano Ronaldo, and many stars who went on to play for major European clubs.
Portuguese clubs can be broken down by club:
Other leagues feature Dutch clubs, Belgian clubs, Scottish clubs, Brazilian clubs, MLS, on the other clubs page.
Founded in 1904, Benfica is the most decorated club in Portugal and one of the most popular in the world. They won two European Cup titles in 1961 and 1962, with Eusébio, the Black Panther. Their red jersey, emblazoned with an eagle, is produced by adidas. Sporting, established in 1906, is famous for its academy, which produced Luís Figo and Cristiano Ronaldo; their green and white hoops jersey is iconic.
Founded in 1893, FC Porto plays at the Dragão stadium, the dragon. They have won the European Cup twice, in 1987 and again in 2004, under the management of José Mourinho, a year after winning the UEFA Cup. Their vertical striped jersey in blue and white is one of the most recognizable in Europe. Porto jerseys come in home, away, third, and fourth versions, for adults, children, and women. The New Era cap completes the look.
