The dragon of the crest and the Estádio do Dragão

The Futebol Clube do Porto was established on 28 September 1893, making it one of the oldest clubs in the country. The dragon atop its crest, above the city's coat of arms, has given its nickname to the players and its name to the stadium: the Estádio do Dragão, inaugurated in November 2003 to replace the old das Antas stadium, hosted the opening match of Euro 2004. The blue and white vertical striped kit sets Porto apart from its great Lisbon rivals, Benfica in red and Sporting in green.

Vienna 1987, Gelsenkirchen 2004: European nights

On 27 May 1987 in Vienna, Porto overturned Bayern Munich in the final of the European Cup: Algerian Rabah Madjer equalised with a famous backheel, before Juary secured the win. In December, under the snow of Tokyo, Madjer once again claimed the Intercontinental Cup against Peñarol, with a long lob in extra time. In the early 2000s, José Mourinho followed up with the UEFA Cup in 2003 and the Champions League in 2004, winning three-nil against Monaco. In 2011, in Dublin, a header from Falcao beat Braga in the Europa League final.

Current shirts, Era and retro items

The home kit comes in adult cut, children's size, and a more fitted women's version at the shoulders and waist; the away, third, and fourth kits explore other colours around the blue and white identity. History buffs will turn to the retro shirt from the 1971-72 season, with a vintage collar and crest, and to the tracksuit top inspired by the 1957-58 season. The New Era cap, with a curved visor and stretch band, and the sweatshirt can be worn away from the stands. One should take their usual size for a supporter shirt.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Portuguese Clássico?

It's the match between FC Porto and Benfica, the two clubs that dominate Portuguese football. Beyond the sport, it contrasts the industrial north of the country with Lisbon, the capital, giving it a particularly intense rivalry.

Which great players have marked the history of FC Porto?

Fernando Gomes, European Golden Shoe winner in 1983 and 1985, remains a legend of the club, just like goalkeeper Vítor Baía, playmaker Deco, or Colombian striker Falcao. Rabah Madjer and João Pinto represent the sacred generation of 1987.

What is the difference between the third kit and the fourth kit?

The third kit is used when neither the home nor away kits are distinct enough from the opposing team's kit. The fourth kit, rarer, is often a special edition worn during a few matches, making it a sought-after piece by collectors.

How to wash an FC Porto shirt without damaging the crest?

Turn the shirt inside out, wash it at a maximum of thirty degrees, without fabric softener, then dry it flat or on a hanger. The tumble dryer and iron can peel off the heat-pressed crests and prints.

Has FC Porto lost a European final?

Yes, in 1984, Porto lost to Juventus in the Cup Winners' Cup final in Basel. Three years later, the club took revenge on the continental stage by winning the European Cup in Vienna.
