From La Boca to Núñez, the birth of the Millonarios
The Club Atlético River Plate was founded on May 25 1901 in the port district of La Boca, Buenos Aires, from the merger of two small clubs, Santa Rosa and La Rosales. The club then moved north in the city to the neighbourhood of Núñez, where it opened its grand stadium in 1938. In the meantime, in 1931 and 1932, the signings of Carlos Peucelle and then the striker Bernabé Ferreyra, for unprecedented amounts at the time, earned it the nickname Millonarios, which supporters still wear with pride.

La Máquina and the great continental moments
In the 1940s, River's attack, known as La Máquina, amazed the whole continent with Muñoz, Moreno, Pedernera, Labruna, and Loustau, five forwards who constantly rotated. The club won its first Copa Libertadores in 1986, the same year it also won the Intercontinental Cup, followed by other continental titles, notably in 1996, 2015, and 2018. Under the direction of Marcelo Gallardo, coach from 2014 to 2022, River experienced one of the richest periods in its history, with Uruguayan Enzo Francescoli remaining one of its idols.
The red band, born from a carnival ribbon
River Plate's home shirt is white, crossed diagonally by a red band that runs from the shoulder to the hip. According to tradition, in 1905, players stole a red silk ribbon from a carnival float and pinned it across their white kit. The design was then set aside for a time, before becoming the club's emblem in the early 1930s. The away shirt changes more from one version to another. For care, the shirt should be washed inside out, at no more than thirty degrees, without a tumble dryer, to preserve the badge and the printing.
