From Manchester City to the Yankees: the birth of the club

The New York City FC was announced in May 2013 as the twentieth franchise of Major League Soccer, the result of a partnership between the City Football Group, owner of Manchester City, and the New York Yankees, the baseball franchise from the Bronx. The club played its first official match in March 2015 against Orlando City, another newcomer to the league. To kick off the project, it signed David Villa, world champion with Spain in 2010, later joined by Frank Lampard and Andrea Pirlo: Villa became the first top scorer in the club's history and its captain.

MLS Cup 2021 and Campeones Cup: the New York trophies

On December 11, 2021, NYCFC won the MLS Cup in Portland against the Timbers: after a one-all draw, the New Yorkers triumphed in the penalty shootout, thanks to two saves from their goalkeeper Sean Johnson, named the final's Most Valuable Player. Managed by Norwegian Ronny Deila, the team then included Argentine Valentín Castellanos, the top scorer of the regular season with nineteen goals. On September 14, 2022, the club added the Campeones Cup, which pits the MLS champion against the Mexican champion, by defeating Atlas two nil at Yankee Stadium.

Sky blue and round badge: the home kit

The home jersey of NYCFC features the sky blue inherited from Manchester City, often accented with touches of navy blue and orange, the latter colour appearing on the flag of the city of New York. On the chest, the club's round badge, stamped with the letters NYC and FC, evokes the tokens that were once used to take the New York subway. In the stands, members of The Third Rail, the main independent supporters' group of the club, have made it their rallying outfit on match nights, and its soft cut allows it to be worn both at the stadium and in the city.
