Total football and the Champions League
Founded on 18 March 1900, Ajax Amsterdam changed the history of the game in the early 1970s. Under Rinus Michels, then Ștefan Kovács, Johan Cruyff's team played total football: the players constantly switched positions, defended high, and pressed together. They won the Champions Cup three years in a row, in 1971, 1972 and 1973. In 1995, Louis van Gaal's generation, almost entirely trained at the club, won the Champions League against AC Milan, with a goal from young Patrick Kluivert.

The red stripe of 1911 and the Johan Cruijff ArenA
The white shirt with a wide vertical red stripe dates back to 1911: promoted for the first time to the top tier, Ajax had to give up a kit identical to that of Sparta Rotterdam, at a time when away kits did not exist. The design has hardly changed since and is among the most recognizable in Europe. The club has been playing in the former Amsterdam ArenA, renamed Johan Cruijff ArenA in 2018 in tribute to its legend, since 1996. Its training centre, De Toekomst, meaning the future, has produced players like Van Basten, Bergkamp, Seedorf, and De Ligt.

The home shirt features the historic red stripe, while the third offers an alternative colour, used when the two primary kits clash with those of the opponent; both are available in adult and children's sizes. The prematch shirt is what players wear during warm-ups, being more graphic and lighter.
