The history of Real Betis Balompié

The Real Betis Balompié was founded in 1907 in Seville and quickly became a club with strong popular support. Its fans have made " Viva el Betis manque pierda", long live Betis even if it loses, their motto, a symbol of loyalty that doesn't depend on results. The club plays at the Benito Villamarín stadium, built for the Ibero-American Exhibition of 1929 and renamed after the name of the president who led Betis from 1955 to 1965. The supporters, known as Béticos, create one of the hottest atmospheres in Spain.

An Andalusian record, from 1935 to 2025

Betis was crowned champion of Spain in 1935, the first Andalusian club to win La Liga. They lifted the Copa del Rey in 1977, and again in 2005 and 2022, with the latter victory coming on penalties in Seville, at the Cartuja stadium. In 2025, they will play in the first European final in their history, in the Conference League. The club has seen the rise of Rafael Gordillo, a homegrown left-back and Spanish international, Joaquín, a child of Andalusia who became an iconic captain, Brazilian Denílson, and Frenchman Nabil Fekir.

The green and white jersey and its cut

The Betis home shirt is recognizable by its green and white vertical stripes, paired with white or green shorts. Green is also the colour of the Andalusian flag, making the jersey a regional emblem far beyond Seville. To choose your own, the supporter cut, which is looser, is worn daily and in the stands, while the authentic version, fitted and lighter, resembles what the players wear on the pitch. When getting a name or number printed, check the spelling of the name and the number before ordering.

Frequently asked questions

Where does the name Real Betis come from?

Betis comes from Baetis, the name given by the Romans to the Guadalquivir, the river that runs through Seville. Balompié is the Spanish translation of the word football, a choice that sets the club apart from the English names that were popular at the time.

What does the title Real in the club's name mean?

It is a royal patronage granted in 1914 by King Alfonso XIII, allowing the club to use the title Real and the crown on its crest. Many Spanish clubs received this distinction in the early 20th century.

What is the nickname of Betis players?

They are called the Verdiblancos, referring to the green and white of the jersey, or the Béticos, like their supporters. These nicknames resonate at every match in the stands of the Benito Villamarín stadium.

How to choose a Betis jersey for a child?

Base it on the child's height in centimeters indicated in the size guide, rather than their age. A slightly loose jersey allows room for growth and can be worn at school or training.

How to care for a printed Betis jersey?

Wash it inside out, at no more than thirty degrees, without fabric softener, to protect the badge and lettering. Dry it flat, away from direct sunlight and without a tumble dryer, as the heat can peel off the heat-pressed markings.
