The insulated ski jacket combines protection against snow and warmth in one garment. The Helly Hansen Sogn relies on the Helly Tech membrane, which is waterproof and breathable, and has a Life Pocket that keeps your phone battery safe from the cold; the jackets from Protest, Spyder and CMP add a snow skirt and pocket for the lift pass. The waterproof shell, which has no insulation, like the Rab Firewall or Patagonia M10 Storm, is much lighter and can be worn over a down jacket or fleece: it is suitable for ski touring and mountaineering, where you adjust your layers based on effort and altitude.

A down jacket is chosen based on the humidity it will face. The down from geese provides the best warmth for its weight: the Rab Mythic uses European down with a fill power of nine hundred, treated to retain its loft in wet conditions, and compresses at the bottom of a bag. Synthetic insulation retains warmth even when wet: the Patagonia Nano Puff uses PrimaLoft Gold insulation made from recycled polyester, while the Rab Cirrus Flex features PrimaLoft insulation combined with breathable fleece side panels for climbs. Under a shell, the down jacket becomes the warm layer for the ski tourer; worn alone, it serves for breaks and the journey back to the resort.
For skinning or snowshoeing, you sweat a lot: a softshell jacket then replaces the shell. The Dynafit Transalper, made from Dynastretch nylon and elastane, blocks wind, sheds a light shower and moves with you thanks to its stretchiness; it is not, however, designed for heavy rain. The fleece, like the Karpos Ambrizzola or Rab Tecton with a hood, fits underneath as an intermediate layer and dries quickly. The socks X-Socks Helixx Gold, designed for long winter sports days, support the calf with a compression spiral and ventilate the foot with airflow channels.
A child falls, sits in the snow and stays still for a long time on the chairlift: their outfit must be both waterproof and warm. Kids' ski jackets from Spyder, a brand founded in 1978 in Boulder, Colorado, around racing outfits, Helly Hansen or CMP, of Italian origin, include a snow skirt and hood; the girls' jacket Protest Deline, created by the Dutch brand founded in 1993 by snowboarders, plays with colours. One should choose a size with a bit of room, checking that the sleeves cover the wrists when the arms are stretched. The ski pants must cover the boots thanks to an inner gaiter, which keeps the snow out.
It is expressed in millimetres of water column: above ten thousand millimetres, the jacket can withstand wet snow and showers. Breathability, given in grams of vapour per square metre per day, is just as important to avoid ending up soaked in sweat.
The bib rises high on the back and prevents snow from getting in during falls: it is suitable for children and off-piste. The pants, which are easier to put on, are sufficient on piste, especially when paired with a jacket that has a snow skirt.
Wash it in the machine at thirty degrees with a mild liquid detergent, without fabric softener that would clog the membrane. A tumble dry at low temperature, if the label allows it, reactivates the water-repellent treatment; otherwise, you can renew it with a spray.
Choose your usual size by trying the jacket over a fleece, to check for ease at the shoulders. With arms raised, the lower back should remain covered, and the sleeves should reach the base of the thumb.
A base layer made of merino wool or synthetic fibre, close to the body, wicks away sweat and keeps you warm. Merino limits odours over several days; synthetic dries faster. Cotton should be avoided, as it stays damp.
