Winning a British Home Championship and sharing the title twice did not make up for a disappointing decade for Scottish football. The nation's first steps in the World Cup were disastrous. Having won the right to go to the 1950 tournament, the Scottish Football Association preferred to withdraw because the team had not qualified in the specific way it had demanded. Scotland participated in the 1954 competition but fielded a team of only 13 of the 22 players allowed to compete as a cost-cutting measure. The 7-0 loss to the defending champion summed up the poverty of their tournament. The 1958 competition in Sweden was a little different but ended once again with a group stage elimination. This continual failure was astonishing when you look at the real playing talent during those years: Alex Scott, Eddie Turnbull, Tommy Docherty, Bobby Collins, Eric Caldow and Dave Mackay would all have made it into the first teams of most of the other great nations.
