The process of deciding who would wear the Dutch goalkeeping jersey in the 1970s was complex and had to take into account both style of play and personal politics. The two most notable candidates were PSV's Jan Van Beveren and Ajax's Jan Jongbloed. Van Beveren won 32 caps between 1967 and 1977 but never played in a major tournament. Jongbloed won fewer caps, but played all the important matches at the 1974 and 1978 World Cups. Piet Schrijvers was his deputy and eventual successor, while Eddy Treijtel, Jan Ruiter and Pim Doesburg also made a handful of appearances during that decade.
