Ipswich Town got off to a slow start in their 1997-98 Division One campaign, but as the season progressed, manager George Burley began to build a strong squad. New signings such as Matt Holland, Mark Venus and £1.1m striker David Johnson all fitted in well alongside the experienced Mauricio Taricco and Jason Cundy and the emerging young Kieron Dyer. Unfortunately, Town lost home and away to Charlton in the semi-final, condemning them to another season in the second tier.
