The East German national team began their 1986 World Cup qualifying campaign hoping to make it to what would have been only the second major tournament in their history. Although they didn't make it, East Germany came close, and their ten-point total was only one point behind France and Bulgaria, who went to Mexico the following summer. Both nations were beaten in their away games in the GDR, with prolific scorers Rainer Ernst and Ralf Minge in fine form in those games and throughout the campaign.
