Under coach Paul Wolfisberg, Switzerland began its 1982 World Cup qualifying campaign with the intention of qualifying for an international tournament for the first time since 1966. Two of the most famous players in the country's history, midfielder Heinz Hermann and central defender Alain Geiger, were key members of this team, but despite their efforts and those of other renowned players such as striker Claudio Sulser, the Swiss failed to achieve their goal.In a difficult and ultimately tight group consisting of Hungary, England, Romania and Norway, the Swiss finished in fourth place and only the top two advanced, despite a famous 2-1 home win over England.
