This model is special to us, the 13.75 Kaihara "Dry Selvage". It amazed us in 2001, and thanks to its incredible aging properties, it still amazes us today. It's the premier selvage denim we've used, and it's one of the reasons Nudie Jeans exists. It's our heritage.
It was when one of our founders, Maria, set her sights on this particular denim that what is today Nudie Jeans began to take shape. And no wonder, for it's exceptionally attractive - its warp is deep indigo, its weft is ecru and inspired vintage, its construction is tight, its hand is dry and it's crisp as starch.
However, the most interesting aspect of denim is its ageing property, i.e. the way it evolves over time. To understand this, we need to be a little more technical. The warp is first dyed in a dark sulfur dye, then in indigo. This dyeing technique gives "Dry Selvage" the deep, muted indigo blue hue that is so beautiful, along with our orange yarn. It's also what gives denim its intriguing shades as it ages. It's what we call "greencast" denim, meaning denim that has a slight greenish-blue tint that becomes more obvious with use. Over the years and with a few washes, as the dark denim becomes lighter, the green tint begins to approach the light blue tint. This is why it is so intriguingly beautiful, and why it has remained in our collection since Nudie Jeans began in 2001.
We're very proud to offer Gritty Jackson Dry Selvage - hats off to the denim and indigo artisans of Kaihara, forever.
We recommend 6 months or more of daily use before premier washing. You'll end up with a nice, worn pair of jeans. That's a long time, but it's only a recommendation. As long as you give it some love, the result will be excellent.
