Mexico 1970's zipped sweatshirt
The 1970s began in some style with Mexico playing a role in making the 1970 tournament they hosted a reality. Javier de la Torre's team made it through the group stage with wins over Belgium and El Salvador and a draw against the Soviet Union, before finishing in the quarter-finals against Italy. However, the rest of the decade brought little joy. Mexico failed to qualify for the 1974 tournament as important players such as Enrique Borja came to the end of their international careers. The national team did reach the 1978 tournament, but it was a long way from its previous results, losing all three of its matches. Young Hugo Sanchez was in the team but he was still too inexperienced to make a good impression.
