The national team had been more international during the Batista era, but in the early 1960s matches were rare during the Castro era, and when there were against neighbouring states, most were lost. While a few friendly matches in 1962 were played within days of each other against Puerto Rico and Jamaica, the missile crisis a few months later pushed football further into the shadows. The self-imposed isolation lasted until 1965, when Cuba returned and participated in the qualifying rounds for the 1966 World Cup.
