The 1970s was a decade marked by two high points in Moroccan football: participation and good performances at the 1970 World Cup and victory at the CAF Africa Cup of Nations six years later. For their first appearance at a FIFA World Cup finals, Morocco lost none of their depth on the world stage. In their first group match, they even led West Germany to a 2-1 victory. A 3-0 defeat against Peru was more in keeping with expectations and ensured elimination in the group stage before the end of their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Bulgaria, Maouhoub Ghazouani scoring the Atlas Lions' equaliser. At the 1976 CAF Africa Cup of Nations, a team featuring goalkeeper Mohamed Hamid Hazzaz, defender Mustapha Fetoui and striker Ahmed Faras won the competition by finishing top of the final group stage, winning two of their matches and conceding a draw. Ahmed Faras scored three goals to finish top scorer of the tournament and Abdelaali Zahraoui contributed two of his own.
