American soccer enjoyed a high profile in 1976 thanks to the success of the North American Soccer League, but that success didn't extend to the U.S. national team.Former 1960s international Walt Chyzowych had the role of Director of Coaching at the U.S. Soccer Federation and also took on the role of coach this year, but the qualifying tournament with Canada and Mexique for the 1978 World Cup didn't work out successfully. The point highlight of the year was the 2-0 home victory over Canada thanks to goals from Miro Ryes and Juli Veee.
