The 1970s was a decade like no other in the history of Arminia Bielefeld, with the club experiencing dramatic and highly contrasting fortunes from season to season. Promotion to Bundesliga for the first time came in 1970, but the club was soon after involved in the match-fixing scandal of 1971. Bielefeld's punishment was forced relegation at the end of the following season. A second promotion seemed assured in 1977, until a playoff loss to Munich 1860 cost them their chance. A 4-0 victory over Bayern Munich was undoubtedly the point highlight of the final campaign of Bundesliga, but autres victories were too rare to avoid relegation again. The decade ended with another promotion campaign for Bielefeld in the 1979-80 season, similar to what the club had experienced ten years earlier.
